How Emigrants from Russia Become Volunteers

Photo project "Russians for Ukraine" about people helping Ukrainian refugees

"My name is Natalia Smirnova, I am a Russian photographer living in Berlin. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I started taking pictures of Russians living outside the country and talking to them about the war. I have never had a deeper conversation in my entire life. We were desperate to understand what we had done all wrong, what we could have done to prevent what happened, and what we can do now to stop it."

Natalya posts the resulting photos and stories on a dedicated website, where she also collects donations to two volunteer initiatives dedicated to helping Ukrainian refugees — Sunflower Care and Rubikus.helpUA.
